Transport encryption of confidential and personal data also existed before the GDPR came into force. As early as 1575, Emperor Maximilian II had letters from his chancellery that were crucial to the election encrypted for post. After centuries in the archives, researchers have decrypted their contents with a piece of paper, pen and algorithm – with interesting results for cryptology and historiography.
